If you are visiting the area of the Texas Panhandle, make sure to make a stop at Amarillo. As far as population is concerned, it’s number 14 in the state of Texas and as such, it offers plenty of things to see and do. This is not only true of the city itself, it is also true of the surrounding area as well. Here are a few things that you will not want to miss.
One of the things that you might enjoy about the area of Amarillo is the history. At one time, it was home to some very large ranches that are now defunct, but there are still large ranches that exist in the area, even down till this day. Europeans began visiting the area quite early, as the first one arrived in 1541. They had some issues with the local Indians, however, and some were killed during the visit. It was in the Civil War and thereafter then the real growth began to be seen in the area, primarily from it being a cattle town.
One of the interesting parts of the area are the botanical gardens, which were established early in the 1920s. A garden club originally took on the project to prove the fact that it was possible to grow some beautiful things in the climate of the area, which is quite dry. You can take guided tours of the grounds or enjoy some of the music that occasionally is played in the area.
Route 66 is also one of the attractions that is not to be missed, and it certainly plays into the history of the area. You can still see a lot of the old elements that made the highway an important part of American history and still a recognized name down to this day.
There are many other things that can be done in the area, and there are plenty of places to visit when you take a vacation. Perhaps you could check out the Don Harrington Discovery Center or take a trip to the Amarillo zoo. If it is a particularly hot day, you would also appreciate the water park at Splash Amarillo.
Regardless of whether you are visiting from outside the area or if you call the city your home, it is good to know what it has to offer. It can really help to make your stay in the area enjoyable.
