Recent Amarillo High School graduate Macy West was the top Texas Panhandle finisher at the National Speech & Debate Association’s national tournament in Birmingham, Ala., last week.

West, who will attend the University of Alabama on full scholarship to compete on the speech and debate team, finished 22nd in the national contest in prose reading out of more than 400 qualifiers. She was eventually knocked out in the semifinal round.

“I was a little disappointed I didn’t make the finals,” said West who was a four-time district champion. “But it was a great experience.”

Eleven area high school students and two entering freshmen participated in the weeklong contest.

AHS graduate Malachi Willis competed in impromptu debate and finished among the top 35.

Hereford incoming freshman Dylan Council was the other area competitor to make it out of the preliminary rounds. Council captured 18th place in the junior high Lincoln-Douglas Debate competition.

Holy Cross graduate Nicholas Aranda was selected as a finalist for speaker of the year for his work over four years of high school speech and debate.
